'Tackling homelessness and exclusion: Understanding complex lives' is a new report from the Multiple Exclusion Homelessness (MEH) Research Programme which reveals the extent to which homelessness amongst single adults is linked with other problems such as mental ill-health, alcohol dependency and experience of institutions such as prison. It also makes clear the challenges facing services if they are to do more to help people with multiple problems.

28.10.11 Absentee dads fuelling addiction, anti social behaviour and crime, says Addaction report

'Dad and Me', an Addaction report has found that absentee dads are fuelling high levels of addiction, anti-social behaviour and crime.

Polling commissioned for the report found that young people believe fatherless young people are more likely to be involved in anti-social behaviour (80.3 per cent) crime (76.4) and take drugs (69.1).

And it warns the Government that unless urgent action is taken to address this 'father deficit' this problem will worsen as intergenerational fatherlessness becomes the norm in some of Britain’s poorest communities.

"What was particularly revealing was the impact that growing up without a dad had on these young people. Far from the view that the make-up of families does not matter, our evidence suggests that not having a dad can be deeply damaging to a young person, especially where there are no alternative positive male role models," said Martin Glynn the report's author.

Dr. Fellegi (Director Foresee) and Dr. Barabas (OKRI Head) said: "We believe that this practical guide represents a small but important milestone in the adaptation and introduction of restorative practices, like mediation and group conferencing, which have already been recognised and used throughout Europe and the world, in prison settings".

‎"Since the age of 15, I have known that I want to be a prison governor. In order to achieve this, for the past three years, I have been studying for a Bachelor's Degree in Applied Criminology at De Montfort University. As part of my final ...assessment, I had to complete a dissertation on any topic I chose (so long as it was related to Criminology!) and I decided to focus mine on 'Why Prison Doesn't Work', detailing what I perceive to be the main issues within the prison system which I hope to tackle as best I can, during my forthcoming career."
