Prisoner's Sunday 17 November 2002

"Some sat in the dark, in deepest darkeness, prisoners bound fast...and there was none to help"
Psalm 107

Prisoner's Sunday is the third Sunday in November and marks the beginning of Prisoner's Week, which ends on Saturday 23 November. An ecumenical Prisoner's Week Committee was formed in 1975 to raise awareness among Christians of the needs of prisoners and their supporters, victims, prison staff and all those working for prisoners and their families. The Committee publishes a prayer leaflet.

This years theme is 'Am I my brother's keeper?' The story of Cain and Abel is a story about the consequences of sin. It shows division and conflict between human beings. It also speaks of a God concerned for both the victims and the perpretrators of crime. (Genesis 4:1-16)

Each day during the week there is a verse from the passage and it is suggested that those wishing to join in, use it for meditation and prayer. Churches will be giving out leaflets on Prisoners Sunday and many will be displaying pictures from the Prison Service and Prison Service Chaplaincy.
